Abolition of Slavery in the West Indies

In Britain, the abolitionist fight was primarily against the transatlantic slave trade. Wilberforce and his supporters often were at pains to point out that they had no intention of attacking Caribbean slavery. Nevertheless, Great Britain abolished slavery in 1834.
