William Wilberforce

William Wilberforce (1759-1833), a wealthy British Member of Parliament. In 1787 he co-founded The Committee for the Abolition of the Slave Trade with Granville Sharp and Thomas Clarkson among others. They then founded The Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade, of which Wilberforce was appointed leader. In May, 1788 he introduced a motion in the House of Commons calling for an early abolition of the trade but hearings on the subject dragged on for three years.
