Jean-Pierre Boyer (1776-1850), Haitian president stated that those "who come, being children of Africa, shall be Haytians as soon as they put their feet on the soil of Hayti." He was eager to attract African Americans to Haiti. In 1824, Reverends James Forten and Richard Allen of Philadelphia formed the Haytian Emigration Society of Coloured People. On August 23, 60 emigrants sailed on the Charlotte Corday from Philadelphia. They were followed a few weeks later by 120 from New York, 21 from Baltimore, 160 from Concordia, New York, and within two months by another 280 emigrants from Baltimore.
