Arrival in Charleston

The Carolinas and Georgia received more than 210,000 people, or 54.2 percent of the total number of deported Africans. This newspaper advertisement from the 1780s announces a sale, near Charleston, South Carolina, of newly-arrived Africans. The name of the ship, Bance Island is a reference to the famous barracoon located on Bance island in Sierra Leone.
