Born in present-day Benin, Baquaqua was deported to Brazil in the early 1840s. Sold to a ship captain, he jumped ship in New York City, and later traveled to Haiti and Canada. A Muslim, he converted to Christianity, attended college, and became a lecturer. In 1854, he published the Biography of Mahommah G. Baquaqua, a Native of Zoogoo, in the Interior of Africa.
